Officially dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria, Cartagena Cathedral ranks among the oldest cathedrals in South America. Its colonial architecture and religious heritage speak to the central role it has played throughout the historical life of Cartagena. Begun in the later sixteenth century, the building was damaged while still unfinished during an English assault on the port and was only completed in the following century, a history written into its heavy coral-stone walls. A tiled dome and a tower crowned in the nineteenth century rise above the surrounding rooftops of the walled city, and the wide three-aisled interior, carried on stout columns, retains gilded altarpieces and the plain dignity of early colonial building.
