Pura Ulun Danu Batur, Indonesia

Pura Ulun Danu Batur, Indonesia

Set within the highlands of Bali's Bedugul Regency, atop a plateau overlooking Lake Beratan, stands the majestic Ulun Danu Temple, both a famous, picturesque landmark and a significant Hindu temple complex. Built at the water's edge, its multi-tiered meru shrines appear to float on the surface of the crater lake when the level rises, their thatched roofs mirrored in still water beneath the surrounding volcanic ridges. The temple is dedicated to the goddess of the lakes and waters, the deity on whom Bali's irrigated rice cultivation depends, and it stands at the head of a system of water temples that has ordered farming in the highlands for centuries. Cool mountain air and lakeside gardens complete the setting.
