The gate of Wringin Lawang stands within the Trowulan archaeological site, a short distance south of Jatipasar village. Its name, meaning 'The Banyan Tree Gate,' reflects the monumental red-brick architecture that once marked entry into the ancient Majapahit capital. It is a candi bentar, or split gate: a single tapering structure cleanly divided down the middle to leave an open passage between two mirrored halves, a form that remains central to temple design in Bali today. Rising alone from open grassland, stripped of the walls and courts it once served, it is among the oldest and largest gateways of its type to survive from the Majapahit era, and one of the most photographed monuments at Trowulan.
