Holy Martyr George, Serbia

Holy Martyr George, Serbia

The Church of St George at Oplenac and the Karađorđević dynasty's mausoleum tell the story of the First Serbian Uprising against Ottoman rule, led by George Petrović, known as Karađorđe, or "Black George". Raised in the early 20th century by King Peter I, grandson of the uprising's leader, the white marble church crowns a hill above the town of Topola and shelters the tombs of the royal family in its crypt. Its interior is covered with mosaics copied from the finest Serbian medieval frescoes, a deliberate summary of the nation's artistic history in a single building. The site stands as a pearl of the cultural and historical heritage of Topola and Oplenac in Serbia.
