فيلا ستامبولي

فيلا ستامبولي

Built for a family enriched by the tobacco trade, the Stamboli villa belongs to the moment when the Crimean coast became a fashionable resort and private clients commissioned houses meant to be looked at as much as lived in. Its architecture is frankly theatrical: an orientalising composition of domes, horseshoe arches, arcaded loggias and pale rendered walls, arranged around terraces that open towards the sea. The interiors continue the theme with carved detail, coloured glass, and reception rooms planned for entertaining. Like many such houses it changed hands and functions after the collapse of the world that produced it, and that second life is part of the story. The episode films the villa as an architectural document of a very specific society, a merchant elite adopting an exotic style to announce its arrival, and as a piece of coastal landscape in the changing light of the Black Sea.
