Few monuments are experienced the way the Pool of Arches is. A stair descends from a modest courtyard in Ramla into a subterranean hall where rows of pointed arches spring from massive piers and carry the vaults above still water. Built in the early Islamic period, when Ramla was a major administrative and commercial centre, the reservoir was engineered to collect and store the water on which the city depended — a piece of infrastructure conceived with the ambition normally reserved for religious architecture. Openings in the roof drop shafts of daylight onto the surface, and the reflections travel across the vaults as visitors cross the cistern in small rowing boats. The acoustics, the temperature and the near-total absence of noise make it one of the most atmospheric interiors in the country.
