Qaqun occupies a low mound in the Sharon plain, a position with no natural drama but considerable strategic value: from here the roads linking the Mediterranean coast to the hills of the interior could be watched and controlled. Successive powers fortified the spot. Crusader builders raised a stronghold here, and later Islamic-period occupants rebuilt and adapted the defences, leaving a compact ruin in which different construction techniques, wall lines and vaulted spaces can still be distinguished. Today the site rises above cultivated fields and orchards, its broken walls catching the long light of the coastal plain, with views that explain at a glance why the mound mattered.
