Qumran sits on a pale terrace between the cliffs of the Judean desert and the shore of the Dead Sea, one of the harshest inhabited landscapes on earth. The excavated settlement is modest in scale but exceptionally legible: an aqueduct bringing floodwater from the wadi, a chain of plastered cisterns and stepped ritual baths, communal rooms, a tower, workshops and a pottery kiln. What made the place world-famous lies just above it, in the caves pocked into the marl and limestone: the scrolls recovered there in the mid-twentieth century constitute the oldest surviving body of biblical manuscripts and a unique corpus of texts from the community that lived in this desert. Their discovery reshaped the scholarly understanding of scripture, of Jewish religious diversity, and of the world in which early Christianity emerged.
