Megiddo commands the pass where the road linking Egypt to Mesopotamia enters the Jezreel Valley, and that single fact explains everything about it. Whoever held Megiddo controlled the traffic of the ancient Near East, and the mound accordingly accumulated one city on top of another across thousands of years — a stack of superimposed settlements that has made it one of the most intensively excavated sites in the world and a reference point for the chronology of the region.
