The Palace of Culture dominates the centre of Iasi, the historic capital of Moldavia in eastern Romania. It was built in the first decades of the twentieth century to designs by the architect Ion D. Berindey, on ground long occupied by the princely court, and it was intended from the outset as an assertion of civic and administrative authority: a vast symmetrical composition of turrets, pinnacles and pointed arcades in a neo-Gothic idiom then fashionable across Central Europe. Its clock tower, whose chimes mark the hours over the city, became the emblem of Iasi. Behind the historicist envelope, the building used the structural techniques of its time, and the interiors, with their painted vaults, mosaic floors and monumental staircase, were conceived as ceremonial spaces. Having served as a courthouse and administrative seat, the palace now houses several museums covering history, ethnography, art and science, making it both a monument and a cultural institution in continuous use.
