تانايس، المدينة اليونانية على نهر الدون

تانايس، المدينة اليونانية على نهر الدون

Tanais was established in the third century BC by Greek colonists from the Bosporan kingdom, close to the mouth of the Don, at the point where the Hellenic world gave way to the steppe. It functioned above all as an emporium: grain, fish, wine, oil and slaves passed through it, and the city's population came to combine Greek settlers with the Sarmatian and other peoples of the surrounding plains, producing a distinctly hybrid culture visible in its material remains. Excavated since the nineteenth century and now protected as an open-air museum reserve, the site preserves fortification walls, street plans, cellars, storage jars and the foundations of houses, along with inscriptions and funerary monuments that document its mixed civic life. Its interest for a documentary lies in that meeting point: not a monumental capital but a frontier city, and one of the clearest surviving illustrations of how the ancient Mediterranean traded and negotiated with the nomadic world beyond it.
