Santo Antônio de Lisboa, Santa Catarina Island, Brazil

Santo Antônio de Lisboa, Santa Catarina Island, Brazil

The legacy of Portuguese and Azorean settlers runs deep on Santa Catarina Island, shaping the architecture, cuisine and cultural and religious traditions of Floripa, as locals affectionately call the city. Santo Antônio de Lisboa, one of the island's oldest parishes, welcomed its first inhabitants in the 17th century. The village sits on the sheltered north-western shore, facing the mainland across a bay whose calm water made it a natural landing place and now supports the oyster beds that supply its restaurants. Its lanes are lined with low colonial houses, whitewashed and trimmed in blue, gathered around the parish church of Nossa Senhora das Necessidades on a rise above the waterfront. The bay is known for its sunsets.
