Located in Beijing, the Summer Palace stands as a masterpiece of Chinese imperial landscape design. This exploration of its palaces, gardens, and lakes reveals the history, artistry, and symbolism behind a cherished former royal retreat. The composition turns on the relationship between Longevity Hill and the broad expanse of Kunming Lake, with temples and pavilions terraced up the slope and causeways and bridges dividing the water, a landscape shaped to quote the celebrated scenery of southern China.
