Telavi Fortress & the Castle of Batoni, Georgia

Telavi Fortress & the Castle of Batoni, Georgia

Set on the foothills of the Gombori Mountains and the Great Caucasus, Telavi is the main city and administrative center of Georgia's eastern Kakheti province. Rising in the vineyard-covered Alazani Valley at nearly 500 meters above sea level, its historic fortress and the Castle of Batoni crown a landscape prized for its fresh mountain air. Batonis Tsikhe, the residence of the kings of Kakheti, retains its walls and towers, a royal palace, a bathhouse, and two court churches within a single enclosure, and is associated above all with Erekle II, who ruled from here in the eighteenth century. The town serves as the working capital of Georgia's best-known wine region, and an ancient plane tree stands at its center.
