Bethphage marks the traditional starting point of Jesus's triumphal entry into Jerusalem, commemorated on Palm Sunday. Located between Bethany and the Mount of Olives in the holy city, the village is marked by the Bethphage Church, which houses a stone traditionally identified as the one Jesus used to mount the donkey at the start of his procession. The Franciscan sanctuary standing today was built in the nineteenth century over the remains of a medieval chapel, and the venerated block preserves painted decoration from the Crusader period on its faces. Each year the Palm Sunday procession sets out from here and descends the Mount of Olives towards the Old City, one of the most widely attended events of the Jerusalem religious calendar.
