Built on and around the ancient city of Acre, also known as St. John of Acre, Akko holds many sites of deep historical significance. The Hospitaller Fortress stands among its major medieval monuments, though until recently only one or two vaulted rooms were known, the rest buried or hidden beneath later Ottoman construction. This first part sets the compound in its context: the headquarters of the Knights Hospitaller in the capital of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem, a walled port that was for a century the busiest harbour of the eastern Mediterranean. It follows the Gothic halls, the great courtyard and the refectory with its massive piers, and explains why an Ottoman citadel raised on top of the medieval city preserved rather than destroyed it.
