Sant'Antioco Old Town, Sardinia, Italy

Sant'Antioco Old Town, Sardinia, Italy

A volcanic island in the Mediterranean off Sardinia's south-western coast, Sant'Antioco preserves the site of the ancient Phoenician and Roman city of Sulcis. Explore its Basilica, the Savoy Fort and the museums that trace its long and layered past. Founded by Phoenician settlers and later a Roman town linked to the mainland by a causeway still in use, it retains a tophet, the open-air sacred precinct with its funerary urns, and an extensive necropolis whose rock-cut chambers were reused as dwellings into modern times. Catacombs run beneath the basilica of the martyr who gives the island his name. The town is also one of the last places where sea silk, woven from the filaments of a great Mediterranean shellfish, is remembered.
