Patuxai is a massive war monument and triumphal arch at the heart of Vientiane, completed in 1968 using funds originally intended for an airport, which has earned it the affectionate local nickname of the vertical runway. Its name means Victory Gate, and it was built between 1957 and 1968 to honour the Laotian soldiers who died in the Second World War and in the struggle for independence from France. The silhouette recalls the Arc de Triomphe, but every surface is Lao: mythological figures, lotus motifs and kinnari reliefs cover the arches and ceilings. Filmed in 4K, this episode climbs from the boulevard below to the upper terrace, where the monument opens onto a panorama of the Laotian capital.
