Ohrid area, North Macedonia (Part 1)

Ohrid area, North Macedonia (Part 1)

Ohrid, the largest city on Lake Ohrid in North Macedonia, was once home to 365 churches, one for each day of the year, earning it the nickname “Jerusalem of the Balkans.” Its picturesque houses and historic monuments draw visitors to this southwestern city near Resen and Bitola. Rising in tiers from the shore to the fortress of Tsar Samuel, the old town preserves Byzantine frescoes, the cliff-top church of St. John at Kaneo and the memory of the Slavic literary school taught here more than a thousand years ago. City and lake together form one of the rare sites inscribed by UNESCO for both cultural and natural value.
