Dominating the tip of one of the peninsulas around the Grand Harbour, Fort St. Angelo, or Forti Sant'Anġlu, sits at the point of the Birgu, or Vittoriosa, peninsula. Enjoying a commanding view over the entire harbour, the fort occupies a position at its exact midpoint. Fortified since medieval times and rebuilt by the Knights of the Order of St John, it served as their headquarters and as the anchor of the defense during the Great Siege of 1565, later passing to the British before its modern restoration.
