Perched atop Wawel Hill overlooking the Vistula River, Wawel Cathedral has served for centuries as the coronation and burial site of Polish kings. The present church, consecrated in the fourteenth century, blends Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance architecture, the golden-domed Sigismund Chapel counting among the finest Renaissance works north of the Alps, while the great Sigismund bell still sounds on days of national significance. Part of Kraków's UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic centre, this sacred landmark remains a powerful symbol of Polish faith, monarchy and national identity, and one of the country's most visited monuments.
