Al-Omari Grand Mosque, Palestinian Territories

Al-Omari Grand Mosque, Palestinian Territories

Amid the crowds and bustle of Gaza stands the Al-Omari Mosque, the city's largest and oldest place of worship and a major Islamic and archaeological landmark, also known as the Great Mosque. It rises near the old market in the Al-Daraj neighborhood, whose name means "Quarter of the Steps" and which forms Gaza's oldest district, a neighborhood of profound historical significance. The site carries the memory of successive civilizations: a Byzantine church once stood here before the building was converted into a congregational mosque, and it bears the name of the caliph Umar. Damaged and rebuilt many times across the centuries, it has remained the spiritual centre of the old city.
