Donskoy Monastery, Russia

Donskoy Monastery, Russia

In the south of central Moscow, weathered towers and a long fortified wall recall the city's defensive past and enclose the celebrated Donskoy Monastery. Founded at the end of the 16th century, in 1591, to commemorate Moscow's deliverance from a Crimean Tatar advance, it grew into one of the capital's wealthiest religious houses, and its Great Cathedral remains a landmark of Moscow Baroque. Its necropolis holds the graves of noble families, writers and clergy, making the grounds a rare surviving record of pre-revolutionary Russian society. Today the monastery is a national heritage site symbolising both faith and strength, and the film reads its walls, domes and burial grounds as one continuous chronicle.
