Wat Phra Chao Mengrai, Chiang Mai, Thailand

Wat Phra Chao Mengrai, Chiang Mai, Thailand

In the mountain-ringed setting of the beautiful city of Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand, lies the small but gorgeous temple of Wat Phra Chao Mengrai. Dating to the early reign of King Mengrai, who founded the Lanna capital in 1296, it remains a cherished piece of the city's ancient religious heritage, and takes its name from the revered Buddha image enshrined in its principal hall. Gilded woodwork, naga balustrades and the tiered roofs characteristic of Lanna building give the modest compound a refinement out of proportion to its size. This documentary approaches it as one of the quiet places of the old town, where devotion continues largely unobserved by the visitors filling the larger temples nearby.
