Ohrid, See der Heiligen – Teil zwei

Ohrid, See der Heiligen – Teil zwei

Lake Ohrid is one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe, and the town on its shore was for centuries a centre of Slavic Christianity, learning and letters. The combination earned the region a rare dual inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List, for nature and culture together. This second programme continues the survey begun in the first: churches whose Byzantine frescoes are among the finest surviving in the Balkans, the celebrated chapel set on a cliff above the water, the monastic and scholarly foundations associated with the region's role in the spread of the Slavonic liturgy, and the fortress walls above the old town. The camera also turns to the lake itself — its clarity, its endemic life, its fishing traditions and the villages along the shore. Filmed in 4K with aerial coverage, the film stands alone or pairs naturally with the first part for a two-hour heritage strand.
