Korela occupies a strategic knot on the Karelian Isthmus, where the Vuoksi River links the interior to Lake Ladoga. Whoever held the island held the passage, and the fortress changed hands repeatedly between Novgorod, Sweden and Russia, each power leaving its mark on the defences: medieval stone, earth ramparts adapted to artillery, later barracks and gates. Compact and low-lying, the site is defined as much by water as by masonry, its bastions reflected in the slow current. Today it houses a regional museum whose collections trace the layered history of the isthmus. Filmed in 4K across the seasons, the programme walks the ramparts, enters the round tower and the vaulted chambers, and reads Korela as a case study in how a single position is rebuilt by successive states.
