Sofia's synagogue is one of the largest Sephardic houses of worship in Europe and one of the defining buildings of the modern Bulgarian capital. Consecrated in the early twentieth century, it was designed in a Moorish revival idiom: horseshoe arches, patterned brickwork, a broad dome and an interior washed in coloured light. Beneath that dome hangs a monumental chandelier, and the ornamental programme rewards the slow, deliberate camerawork that 4K allows. The building is also a document of Bulgaria's Sephardic community, whose ancestors reached the Balkans after the expulsions from the Iberian peninsula and whose life in the city ran through the upheavals of the twentieth century.
