The fortress of Kypros stands on a hill above the oasis of Jericho, at the point where the road from the Jordan valley begins its climb towards Jerusalem. It belongs to the network of strongholds associated with Herodian rule, positioned to control routes, protect the winter palaces below and provide refuge — a chain of high, isolated sites of which Masada is the most famous. The remains include terraces cut into the slope, cisterns, bathing installations and traces of decorated floors, showing that these fortresses were not only military but also comfortable residences in miniature. The film emphasises what the position explains: from the summit, the whole valley opens out — the palm groves of Jericho, the Dead Sea to the south, the mountains of Moab across the water — and the strategic logic of the site becomes self-evident. Aerial photography follows the ascent and the ridge line, while ground sequences examine the engineering that made life possible on a waterless hilltop, an achievement common to the fortified sites of the Judean desert edge.
