In the wooded country of north-eastern Romania, Vorona Monastery occupies a clearing set apart from the villages around it. The enclosure follows the pattern familiar throughout Moldavian monastic architecture: a church at the centre, a bell tower over the gateway, and ranges of cells and workshops closing the perimeter, all arranged so that the community's daily movement turns around the sanctuary. Inside the church, painted decoration, icons and the carved screen separating nave from altar create the enveloping visual environment characteristic of the Orthodox rite. Life here is ordered by the liturgical hours and the seasons: services before dawn, work in the gardens and the workshops, the reception of visitors and pilgrims who come for feast days. The programme films the site without commentary on matters it cannot verify, attentive instead to what is visible: the architecture, the light, the sung offices, and the relationship between a monastic community and the forest that surrounds and sustains it.
