The Joseph-Volokolamsk Monastery

The Joseph-Volokolamsk Monastery

West of Moscow, near Volokolamsk, the monastery founded by Joseph of Volotsk at the end of the 15th century stands as one of the most complete monastic ensembles of central Russia. Its founder was a decisive figure in the religious debates of his age, an advocate of a disciplined, land-holding monasticism, and the community he established grew into a fortified estate. Later centuries gave it its present face: high brick walls, tiered decorative towers, a tented belfry, a cathedral at the centre of the courtyard, all set beside water that doubles the silhouette in still weather. Filmed in 4K from the shore and from the air, the programme circles the enclosure, enters the church and the vaulted service buildings, and follows the monastic day, offering a self-contained portrait for sacred-heritage collections.
