Wat Plai Laem is a working Buddhist temple designed to be seen from the water. Built out over a man-made lake on the north-eastern shore of Koh Samui, its centrepiece is a tall white figure of Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion, whose many arms fan out above the surface in a gesture of protection; a seated laughing Buddha faces her from the far bank. The ordination hall, reached by a causeway, is painted in the saturated reds, golds and greens of the Thai-Chinese craft tradition, its walls carrying scenes from the life of the Buddha. The temple reflects the mixed heritage of Samui's coastal communities, where Thai Theravada practice sits alongside Chinese Mahayana devotion and the two visual languages have merged rather than competed. Fish crowd the shallows, fed by visitors who buy bread at the gate in a small daily act of merit-making. Filmed in 4K, the programme uses the mirror of the lake, the shifting tropical light and the sheer density of ornament to build a portrait of living faith on a resort island.
