Behind an unassuming street front in Acre stands one of the most singular religious interiors in the Mediterranean. The Or Torah synagogue — long known as the Tunisian synagogue, founded by Jewish families who came from North Africa — has been covered, surface by surface, in mosaic. Nothing was left plain: floors, piers, walls, vaults, stairwells and façades are worked in coloured tesserae and stained glass, in a programme that unfolds over several storeys. The imagery draws on the Jewish festivals and the biblical narrative, on the holy cities and the symbols of the tribes, and on the memory of the communities that made the journey from the Maghreb. The effect is cumulative and disorienting in the best sense: a building conceived less as decorated architecture than as a single continuous surface of meaning, assembled patiently over decades. For a 4K production the site is exceptional — dense colour, reflective glass, intricate detail that rewards macro work, and a human story of migration, memory and craft. It also sits within the walled city of Acre, allowing the film to place the synagogue in one of the great living historic ports of the eastern Mediterranean.
