Ruzhany Palace, Belarus

Ruzhany Palace, Belarus

In the small settlement of Ruzhany, in Belarus's Pruzhany district, stands an architectural monument of the Sapieha dynasty: Ruzhany Palace. Nicknamed the "Belarusian Versailles", it blends Baroque and classicist styles into one striking design. The Sapiehas were among the greatest magnate families of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and Ruzhany was their principal residence, a place where state business and diplomacy were conducted as much as a country seat; the complex included a theater alongside the state apartments. Its signature element is the monumental entrance gate flanked by curving colonnaded arcades that sweep out to enclose the forecourt. Ruined by war and neglect, the gateway and side wings have since been restored.
