El Sagrario, Ecuador

El Sagrario, Ecuador

Located in the historic center of Quito, El Sagrario is a refined example of colonial religious architecture. Its baroque interiors and artistic details reflect the site's enduring role in the spiritual and cultural life of Ecuador's capital. Built in the seventeenth century beside the Metropolitan Cathedral, for which it long served as the parish sanctuary, the church presents a carved stone screen façade and a domed crossing covered in painted ornament. Inside, gilded woodwork, polychrome sculpture, and canvases produced by the Quito School illustrate the workshops that supplied churches across the Spanish colonial world. The building stands within Quito's historic center, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978.
