Shivta National Park, Israel (Part 2)

Shivta National Park, Israel (Part 2)

Shivta National Park showcases the impressive remains of a Byzantine city built in the heart of a desert with no natural water sources whatsoever. Its splendid churches, streets, and homes remain astonishing even today, a testament to remarkable ancient engineering. Every drop the town used was caught from winter floods and rooftop runoff, channelled into plastered reservoirs at the centre of the settlement and out to terraced fields where vines and olives were grown. Three churches, a prayer hall added in the Islamic period, and closely packed limestone houses survive to considerable height, and the site is inscribed by UNESCO with the other Nabatean towns of the Negev.
