Kolomenskoye, Russia

Kolomenskoye, Russia

Kolomenskoye is a historic royal estate on the outskirts of Moscow, once a favoured residence of Russian tsars. Renowned for its remarkable churches and wooden architecture, the site preserves centuries of Russian cultural and religious heritage within a UNESCO-recognised landscape. Spread over wooded slopes above the Moskva River, the park is dominated by the white Church of the Ascension of 1532, listed as World Heritage, and by the exuberant reconstruction of the wooden palace of Tsar Alexis, once dubbed the eighth wonder of the world. Ancient orchards, gates, towers relocated from across the country and sweeping river views complete one of Moscow's most photogenic settings.
