Smolensk Fortress Wall, Russia

Smolensk Fortress Wall, Russia

Known as Russia's "Shield City," Smolensk safeguarded the empire's western frontier for centuries against successive European incursions. Its imposing defensive wall, built at the close of the 16th century under the direction of the architect Fyodor Kon, remains one of the city's most striking landmarks and one of the largest fortifications ever raised in Russia. This documentary traces the fortress's origins, including the towering wooden stronghold Ivan the Terrible ordered built in 1554, and its enduring role in Russian history, from the Time of Troubles through the campaigns of 1812 and 1941. Filmed in 4K, it follows the surviving towers and curtain walls as they thread through the modern city.
