Wat Chiang Man, believed to be the oldest temple within the walled city of Chiang Mai, was established by King Mengrai around the founding of the city itself in the late thirteenth century, and served as his residence while the new Lanna capital was under construction. Its most celebrated monument is the Chedi Chang Lom, a gilded stupa whose square base is ringed by carved elephants emerging from the brickwork. The viharn nearby enshrines two revered images, the crystal Phra Sae Tang Khamani and the marble Phra Sila, brought out in procession during the Songkran festivities.
