Odessa Town, Ukraine (Part 1)

Odessa Town, Ukraine (Part 1)

Located on the northwestern shore of the Black Sea near the mouths of four major rivers, the Danube, Dnister, Boh and Dnipro, Odessa ranks among Ukraine's largest and most economically significant cities. This documentary begins an exploration of the city's storied streets and layered heritage, tracing the free-port prosperity of the nineteenth century that paid for its opera house and its grand merchant façades, and the cosmopolitan mix of Greek, Italian, Jewish and Ukrainian communities that shaped its character. Filmed largely within the historic centre, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023, this first part sets out the geography and the commerce that made Odessa what it is.
