La cattedrale della Dormizione della Madre di Dio, Varna

La cattedrale della Dormizione della Madre di Dio, Varna

The Cathedral of the Dormition of the Mother of God dominates the centre of Varna, Bulgaria's principal Black Sea port. Built in the decades that followed the country's return to independent statehood, it belongs to a generation of monumental Orthodox churches conceived as statements of national confidence: massed volumes, domes and a tall bell tower that anchors the city's skyline. Inside, the eye is drawn upward through painted vaults to the iconostasis, where carved woodwork frames the icons and the light of candles does the rest. This episode moves between the two registers the building offers a broadcaster: the exterior, filmed as urban architecture in the changing coastal light, and the interior, filmed as a working place of worship, with liturgical chant, ritual gesture and the steady traffic of the faithful. A cornerstone title for strands on Orthodox heritage and Black Sea culture.
