The Chora of Folegandros occupies the edge of a cliff that falls straight into the Aegean, a position chosen for defence and now among the most striking village sites in the Cyclades. At its heart lies the Kastro, a medieval quarter dating from the Venetian period in which the outer walls of the houses are joined together to form a continuous rampart, entered through narrow gates: an entire settlement conceived as a single fortification. Around it the village opens into a sequence of small squares shaded by plane trees, linked by whitewashed lanes and lined with chapels. A zigzag path climbs from the village to the church of the Panagia on the hill above, from where the whole plan becomes legible. The film works with aerial photography over the cliff, close observation of Cycladic building - flat roofs, cisterns, blue and white - and the daily rhythm of a small island community whose life still concentrates on those squares at the end of the day.
