La moschea reale Ubudiah, Kuala Kangsar

La moschea reale Ubudiah, Kuala Kangsar

Kuala Kangsar is the royal seat of the Malaysian state of Perak, and the Ubudiah Mosque is its emblem. The composition is deliberately theatrical: a large gilded dome flanked by smaller ones and by minarets, all clad in bands of black and white marble that give the silhouette its graphic strength. The design belongs to the Indo-Saracenic idiom that flourished under British administration, drawing on Mughal and Middle Eastern precedent to produce a distinctly imperial-era vision of Islamic architecture. The film examines the exterior geometry, the play of light on marble and gold, the arcaded prayer hall and its decorative programme, and the royal mausoleum that stands alongside. Sequences in the surrounding town, on the banks of the Perak River, situate the mosque within a small royal capital of palaces and administrative buildings. Filmed in 4K with aerial coverage, it is one of the most photogenic sacred sites in South-East Asia.
