Il Krom di Pskov

Il Krom di Pskov

The Pskov Krom occupies the wedge of land where the Pskova flows into the Velikaya, a site that dictated the shape of the fortress: long walls following the rivers, towers at the angles, a single formidable approach by land. Within the enclosure rises the Trinity Cathedral, whose white mass and tall drum dominate the city and once symbolised the authority of a self-governing community that treated the cathedral as its political as well as religious centre. Adjoining the Krom lie the foundations of Dovmont Town, a dense cluster of church remains excavated at the foot of the walls. Filmed in 4K from the rivers, the ramparts and the air, the programme reads the citadel as landscape, as fortification and as the emblem of a medieval city that long kept its independence.
