Vjaz'ma: una città sulla strada di Smolensk

Vjaz'ma: una città sulla strada di Smolensk

Geography made Vyazma important long before anyone thought to fortify it: the town sits on the historic road running west from Moscow towards Smolensk, the corridor along which merchants, pilgrims and armies all travelled. That position brought prosperity, and it brought war - most famously during Napoleon's retreat, and again in the Second World War, which left the centre in ruins. The film reads the town as a palimpsest, moving from surviving churches and monastery walls to the post-war reconstruction that fills the space between them. Particular attention goes to Vyazma's ecclesiastical architecture, whose tent-roofed silhouettes are among the most distinctive in the Smolensk region. Filmed in 4K across the seasons, the programme fits regional-heritage strands and series on the historic towns of European Russia.
