Porta Pretoria, Aosta Valley, Italy

Porta Pretoria, Aosta Valley, Italy

In the city of Aosta stands one of its most significant monuments: the Porta Pretoria. Its name, meaning "gate", reflects its original purpose as the main entrance to the ancient city once known as Augusta Praetoria Salassorum, the Roman colony founded under Augustus at the junction of the routes to the Great and Little St Bernard passes. The gate is a double structure of three arches, an outer and an inner front separated by a small parade court, flanked by towers and still standing to a remarkable height. The original Roman ground level lies several metres below today's street, a measure of the city's accumulated centuries.
