Mount Tabor is unmistakable from a distance: a smooth, isolated dome rising abruptly from the flat farmland of the Jezreel Valley, visible from across Lower Galilee. Its shape alone made it a landmark and a strategic point long before it became a sanctuary; Christian tradition identifies it as the mountain of the Transfiguration, and the summit has carried places of worship through many periods. Today it holds two: the Franciscan Basilica of the Transfiguration, designed by the architect Antonio Barluzzi with two chapels flanking the façade and an apse mosaic that catches the morning light, built over earlier remains still visible in the crypt and the enclosure; and, a short distance away, a Greek Orthodox monastery with its own church and gardens. The ascent is itself a sequence — a narrow road of successive hairpin bends climbing through woodland — and the summit rewards it with a panorama over the whole valley and the hills of Galilee.
