엘자자르: 아크레의 백색 모스크

The El-Jazzar Mosque dominates the skyline of Acre, the fortified port on the northern bay of Haifa whose Old City is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Built under Ahmed Pasha al-Jazzar, the powerful Ottoman governor whose name it carries, it is the largest mosque in the country outside Jerusalem and the clearest statement of Ottoman authority in the coastal north. A flight of steps leads from the crowded market street to a raised, arcaded courtyard paved in stone, with a fountain for ablutions, a sundial, and columns of granite and marble reused from ancient coastal sites. Above it rises the whitewashed prayer hall under its green dome, with a slender minaret that serves as a landmark from the sea. Beneath the courtyard lie vaulted cisterns from earlier periods, a reminder of how densely Acre is layered. The film sets the mosque within its city: the sea walls, the covered souk, the khans of the port, the fishing harbour, and the daily rhythm of a place that is simultaneously a working Arab town, a major archaeological site and a World Heritage destination.
