The Judean Desert, a narrow band of chalk hills falling from Jerusalem to the Dead Sea, became one of the formative landscapes of Christian monasticism, and Euthymius is among the figures most closely associated with its rise. The monastery bearing his name stands east of Jerusalem, off the ancient road towards Jericho, and preserves vaulted structures, cisterns, burial places and stretches of mosaic paving. Like several desert houses, the complex was reused long after its monastic life ended, serving travellers on the road, so that its walls carry successive functions in a single fabric. The film reads the ruins as a lesson in desert survival: how water was collected and stored in a place with almost no rainfall, how a community organised solitude and common life, and how the route between the holy city and the valley below structured a whole network of monasteries and hermitages. Shot in the raking light that models the chalk terrain at either end of the day, it offers audiences a spare, sculptural landscape and a subject — early monasticism — that travels well across confessional lines.
