The ambition of the project is what still impresses: a full Roman city, laid out on a coast that offered no shelter for ships, with a harbour built out into open water using hydraulic concrete poured in place. Named for Augustus, Caesarea became the seat of Roman administration in the province and remained a major port for centuries. The excavated site strings its monuments along the shore: a theatre facing the sea, the hippodrome where the surf now breaks against the seating, the terraces of a palace built onto the rock, warehouses, bath complexes, and an aqueduct running for kilometres along the beach on arcades half buried in sand. Above them, the Crusader town added its own walls and moat. Filmed in 4K with aerial and underwater coverage of the submerged harbour works.
