A Capela do Sagrado Coração

A Capela do Sagrado Coração

Not every sacred place is built to impress. This chapel of the Sacred Heart belongs to the other tradition: architecture at the scale of a small assembly, conceived for silence, repetition and personal prayer. The devotion to the Sacred Heart is among the most widely diffused in Catholic Christianity, carried by religious orders and missions across every continent, and its iconography — the heart, the flame, the crown of thorns, the outstretched hands — is instantly legible to audiences far beyond the region. The film treats the chapel as an interior world: light falling through coloured glass onto stone, the flicker of votive candles, worn wood, the accumulated marks of use, and the objects of daily worship. It follows the hours in which the space is empty and those in which it fills, and observes the care taken by those who maintain it. Filmed in 4K with a strong emphasis on low-light detail and texture, the programme provides a contemplative sequence within a wider religious-heritage strand — a change of scale and register after the great basilicas and monastic complexes, and a reminder that faith is lived as much in small rooms as in great ones.
